Technology and Design

Technology and Design Help Club every Wednesday for all Year 11 and Year 12 T+D students. It will be held within the department from 3.15pm-4.15pm.

KS3

KS3 Technology and Design is taught to all year 8 and 9 pupils. During these two years they are introduced to the subject and the importance of health and safety within the subject. Pupils will have the opportunity to manufacture five products including a Paddle boat and a Steady hand game, which will give an introduction to electronics. The projects build upon skills learnt in the previous project throughout KS3 to allow pupils to work with all types of materials and electronics in different situations.

Year 10 pupils can choose to study Technology and Design and this gives an introduction to GCSE. Throughout this year the pupils will complete 2 manufacturing projects and a design project.

At the end of each year pupils will sit an exam on the theory that has been taught over the year.

KS4

This is chosen by pupils who have studied Technology and Design in Year 10. Over the two years pupils will study topics such as materials, tools and equipment, industrial and commercial processes, sustainability and ethical design and manufacture. Pupils will be involved in a research and design project which is worth 60% of their final grade. This will involve manufacturing a product which will be accompanied by a design portfolio. Pupils will cover the theory aspect of the subject in year 11 and 12 and will sit a 1.5hour examination paper worth 40%.

Carpentry and Joinery

This is chosen by pupils who have been selected for the schools vocational studies programme. The course is two years in duration and pupils can achieve a level two qualification. Pupils will learn about health and safety, basic hand tools and their maintenance, basic wood joints and craft techniques and associated knowledge. The pupils will complete small projects throughout the year with one final piece in year 12. this course is assessed by 100% Controlled Assessment. There will no final examination with this course.
