The English Department were very excited to introduce Accelerated Reading to year 8 pupils in Term 2.
Accelerated Reading is a computer programme that allows teachers to encourage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Following a short test, each pupil picks a book at their level and reads it at their own pace. When the book is finished, the pupil will complete a short quiz on the computer. If the quiz is passed, this gives the teacher and parent an indication that the child has understood what has been read. More importantly, the reader will receive points…and points mean prizes!!
Our pupils are encouraged to choose their own books (both fiction and non-fiction) and are guided by the teacher, to ensure the student can experience success.
All pupils are encouraged to read for at least 35 minutes every day and a proportion of this has been timetabled into the school day, during both English and Registration periods. Reading at home is essential in order to help your child progress.
