On the 1st of March, Miss Brownlee took Aimee and Morgan to an event hosted by Ards and North Down Borough Council who have just become a Fairtrade Borough. They listened to a presentation by John Joseph from India who works for a Fairtrade organisation which produces coffee and spices. They heard how, with Fairtrade, farmers are getting 3x the market value and that it stays stable with a premium added when the market is good. Fairtrade makes such a difference to their lives, in terms of housing and the premium money is used for education, health and support to deal with climate change within their community.
This was useful for the girl’s studies in GCSE Geography and for the wider school as we support Fairtrade Fortnight through our Global Learning Programme.
